Buying Exercise Equipment and Not Looking Foolish

It is sometimes difficult to fit an exercise program into our busy lives. We have to work, take care of the kids and do the various other duties that make up the modern lifestyle.  It is a fact that this lifestyle can have a negative effect on our health. Most of us know that we need to take time out of our busy schedule to exercise, but where do we actually find that time? One solution for the modern DIYer is to build a home gym or at least to convert an existing room into a home gym.

There are several things to consider before going out to buy the fitness equipment required to have a home gym. How often are you going to use it? Do you have space in your home? Is that room suitable? What kind of exercises do you like to do? Should you purchase used or new? Do you need to buy equipment with a specific body area in mind?

Are you Really Going to Use the Exercise Equipment?

This is a silly question really. Because the only answer anyone would ever give is, “Yes. Of course I’ll use it.” We all start out with the best of intentions. But, if you are inexperienced or unsure it may be better to start small and work your way up to the big stuff when you are ready. If you do go for the big home gym with all the fitness equipment an Olympic athlete could wish for, you can always sell it again at a good price.

The market for used exercise equipment is vast. The reason is not typically because people want to upgrade their equipment, but because they bought fitness equipment that they could not resist at the price it was selling for. Or they saw their friends’ gyms and had to have one.

How often have you been seduced by those info commercials showing hot bodies working out with fancy machines? It takes a long time to look as good as the models. The equipment shown is most unlikely to magically transform you into a bodybuilder overnight. You have to use the exercise equipment consistently to develop the body of your dreams. I remember one time a good friend of mine asked to borrow my fitness equipment for a while because he wanted to get in shape. He only wanted it for a couple of weeks.

So make sure before you spend the money that you actually expect to use the equipment consistently and for a long time, otherwise you would probably be better of getting membership at the local gym.

Decide what Type of Exercise You Like

Before you go out to buy the home gym equipment, you must decide what type of exercise you need to do. Do you want to get aerobically fit or do you want to build big muscles. It is always a good idea to consult a doctor before making this decision to be sure that you are healthy enough to do the workout you plan to do. If you are not a runner, then perhaps you would not like a treadmill, despite it being the most acceptable piece of exercise equipment you can buy. Maybe you would be more comfortable with an elliptical machine instead.

The first piece of exercise equipment purchased is often a treadmill. If you are not the active type, it is a less than ideal piece of equipment to start out with. It is too easy to be put off the whole idea of exercising by having a bad experience with the treadmill. A much better piece to start out with is the exercise bike or rowing machine or even an elliptical trainer.

Make Sure You Have The Right Space

When you see fitness equipment displayed in the shop it looks a lot smaller than it actually is. This is because it is usually displayed in a large room or hall where there is lots of room for people to move around and get a good look at it. The retailers are not trying to kid you they just want to display the equipment at its best. But, when you get your treadmill, exercise bike and elliptical trainer home you may find that the only place to fit them all together is out in the garden. Not a bad idea if you live in a place with a suitable climate.

Before you run out and buy a bunch of exercise machines you should map out where you intend to put them in your home. You need to be sure that you have enough room all around to ensure that you have free movement and the ability to use the equipment properly and safely. If you do not have the space for a home gym, there are many pieces of equipment made nowadays that can fold up into smaller units perfect for closet storage or that fit neatly into unused corner areas.

Probably the most important thing to check on before you buy the fitness equipment of begin to develop your home gym is this. Make sure that the building is structurally sound and able to handle the extra weight, stress and movement that you and your fitness equipment will inflict on it. Get advice from a qualified person.

Buying New or Used Fitness Equipment

There are so many pieces of fitness and exercise equipment for sale, both used and low-cost, that it is difficult to recommend that you buy them brand-new. The only reason to buy new is if you could not get particular piece that you really want. It may suit you better to buy a new piece in certain circumstances. For example if you need to have it delivered it can be difficult to get a seller of used equipment to deliver it. The new equipment will usually be delivered in and box or other wrapper to your door with instructions on how to assemble it. This is not always the case with used fitness equipment.

Some used equipment dealers will deliver and assemble the exercise equipment in your home gym for you for a fee. But these are few and far between.

Summary

Make sure that both you and your building are in a healthy enough condition to handle the use of your home gym. Decide what type of exercise you need and want to do. It is usually a good idea to start off with aerobics first before moving on the heavy weight if that is where you want to go.
